If grinding wheels are classified by abrasives, they can be divided into two main categories: traditional abrasives and super abrasives.
CBN and diamond belong to super abrasives. The reason they are called super abrasives is that the hardness of these two abrasives is far higher than that of other traditional abrasives. So, how do we distinguish between the two super abrasives, and how should we choose the grinding wheel abrasives suitable for our production? First, we need to understand the characteristics of both.
What is Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN)?
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN): It was first synthesized in the 1950s by General Electric (GE) in the United States using artificial methods under high temperature and pressure conditions. Its hardness is second only to diamond and far exceeds that of other materials, thus it is collectively referred to as super abrasives along with diamond.
What is diamond abrasive?
Abrasives with high hardness, natural diamonds have high stability but are also expensive. Most grinding wheels are made from synthetic diamonds.
How to decide whether to use CBN or diamond abrasives? Selection criterion (1): The hardness of the workpiece. According to the basic logic of grinding, the hardness of the abrasive should be four times higher than the hardness of the workpiece. If the grinding material is tungsten steel (super hard alloy), it can be found from the hardness table below that only the hardness of diamond (DIA) is more than four times that of tungsten steel (super hard). Therefore, Shengyao recommends using diamond abrasives.
Selection criterion (2): The material of the workpiece. If the workpiece is made of iron-containing materials: use CBN.
If the workpiece is made of non-iron-containing materials: use diamond.
This is because if diamond is used to grind iron-containing materials, it will chemically react with the carbon in iron, which will accelerate the wear rate of the diamond, dull the abrasive, and reduce cutting force, leading to poor processing efficiency due to the need for dressing. Therefore, diamond grinding wheels are not suitable for grinding iron-containing materials.
Selection criterion (3): The speed of the grinding wheel.
Since diamond is a thermally degrading abrasive (high temperature will cause rapid wear), when the grinding wheel speed is high, the grinding temperature increases, which will cause the grinding wheel to wear too quickly. CBN has a micro-fracture structure, and when the grinding wheel speed is fast, it can exert the self-sharpening characteristics of the abrasive, maintaining sharpness.
The above selection criteria are shared for everyone to choose suitable grinding wheel abrasives.

Expectations of the Semiconductor Industry for High-Quality Diamonds (Part 1)
Band gap: determined by the electronic states and atomic configurations of semiconductors, it reflects the energy required for the valence electrons of the atoms that make up this material to be excited from a bound state to a free state; the band gap is an important characteristic parameter of semiconductors. A band gap of zero indicates a metal, a large band gap (generally greater than 4.5 eV) indicates an insulator, and a medium band gap indicates a semiconductor.
Expectations of the Semiconductor Industry for High-Quality Diamonds (Part Two)
The conduction mechanism of semiconductor materials is achieved through two types of charge carriers: electrons and holes, which are classified as N-type and P-type. Diamond, as a group IV element, can be viewed as having a crystal structure formed by two face-centered cubic structures translated along the body diagonal by 1/4 of the lattice constant. Carbon atoms bond with four neighboring carbon atoms through covalent bonds using sp3 hybrid orbitals, forming a tetrahedral structure. By doping diamond with appropriate elements, its electrical properties can be altered, allowing it to be widely used as a semiconductor material in electrical devices.
